Web Design: How It Works

May 30th, 2010   |   Posted in Web Design.

What is a web page? A web page is a presentation of context and visuals that can be viewed on the web. These pages are created by using web design. Using code like CSS or HTML is what makes a web page. They are viewed on an internet browser through a computer, TV or game system. No matter how you use the internet, web pages are the first thing you see.

Old coding that was used for web pages is called HTML. Hyper Text Markup Language is still used, but mostly as a basic layout. XHTML, Flash, CSS and XML are the new reigning web page codes. They offer more flexibility with web pages and websites making use of sound, animations and video.

Internet Browsers are now equipped with plug-ins like QuickTime, Adobe Flash and Java in order to view the new coded web pages. There are many different ways of designing web pages. Most professional sites are given few animations and graphics so as not to over shadow the main service or product being offered.

Most graphic and sound heavy web pages are usually personal websites or more laid back businesses. They make use of these graphical elements in order to catch the viewer’s attention. A few tips to designing web pages or websites are some good ways to begin. One thing to implement is CSS instead of HTML for tables. HTML is a little buggy when it comes to creating tables.

Frames, while they look professional, are truly not ideal to have on your web pages or website. Whenever any formatting is changed on the site, the frames sometimes have to be rebuilt. Plus, they have a tendency to shift out of place like HTML tables. Using the link “Click Here” has also lost much of its appeal.

Content is what truly makes the web page flourish. So, when you include hyperlinks, try to incorporate them throughout your text so they flow and read naturally. All content should be legible and interesting. Don’t bunch all your words into one long paragraph or capitalize all your letters.

While it may be fun to create web pages and sites, web design requires good planning and combination of content and graphics to make it stand out. Things like web page coding may take a bit more learning and practice. It’s a good idea to grab a book or take a class on it to learn more.
