Why You Need SEO Strategies And How They Work

SEO is all the hot buzz of late and anyone trying to create business on the Internet is sure to have at least some basic idea about what it is and how it works. Even people not trying to make money online are starting to use SEO techniques as a way to drive more traffic to visit their Web content, whatever it may be. Social networking sites are good examples. SEO strategies employed here are meant to get people to visit your page but not necessarily for the content poster’s financial gain.

Even those not familiar with SEO (Search Engine Optimization) are probably familiar with the term ’search engine’. A search engine responds to a user’s query by sending back a list of top websites that best match the keywords found in the query. The bigger search sites have literally millions and millions of web pages in their database.

These search engines saw their beginning back in the 90’s when someone decided it would be a good idea to index and categorize everything found on the Internet. A robot called a ’spider’ was sent out by the search site to peruse the entire Internet and send back information to its database. The data was then indexed and marked as having certain, particular keywords. When someone did an online search it would match up keywords in the query with keywords found in the most appropriate websites.

The more keywords or keyword phrases that match between the query and the appropriate web page, the higher the ranking of that page on that particular list supplied to the user by the search site. Owners of websites soon realized they could boost their site’s rankings by adding more ‘hot’ keywords to their content. This was the beginning of SEO strategies. Keywords are the number one factor in SEO but certainly not the only factor. These factors also change in importance as trends change which requires continual adjustment on the part of those controlling website content.

There are several ways of using SEO. Some are legitimate and some are not. The illegitimate techniques, known as ‘black’hat’, are restricted, not allowed and not looked on kindly by the search engine sites. They’re still being used, however, as the Internet is a very difficult animal to control.

Search engines consist of three parts. The ‘crawler’ is the information gatherer responsible for sending appropriate information back to the database. It looks at every page and continually updates the information with regular return visits. It will crawl some sites on a weekly or monthly basis, depending on that site’s popularity. Some very popular sites actually receive several ‘crawlings’ per day!

Next is the indexer. This sorts all of the crawler’s findings and constructs a huge index, like you’d find in the back of a book, based on keywords. Then, when a query is received, the indexer matches it with pages containing the keyword or phrase and sends it on to the third part of the search engine which is the ranker.

Rankings depend on several factors and these factors change from time to time. What was important five years ago may not be a big deal today. Proper SEO strategies have to take this into account and be fluid and flexible.
