Goals and objective setting is a common practice in organizations. From time to time, such goals are reviewed and reestablished to allow the company to progress in the direction set forth in its mission statement. The organization’s overall goals are then split up into departmental objectives. Departmental heads are tasked to analyze these goals and establish key performance indicators to determine the progress of the individual department towards the attainment of these objectives.

For any department in question, the rule of thumb is to establish three to five KPIs that allow the company’s department to determine its individual business efficacy. Companies maintaining excessive KPIs generally tend to lose focus, which can be counterproductive. A SharePoint Dashboard’s key advantage is that it can be automated to gather summarized information regularly. This allows the organization to identify its trends and adopt any necessary corrective measures if the trends are not progressing in the desired direction.
