Social Networking Explained

April 23rd, 2010   |   Posted in SEO.

If you ask a room full of people to define social networking, you will likely get several different answers. The meaning of the term has changed over time. Today’s social networking is not the same phenomenon as the social networking of only a few years ago.

In years past, social networking meant to meet other people face-to-face and interact. That is no longer the case. Today, social networking simply refers to the practice of gathering people together into specific groups.

What has caused this shift to occur? Put simply: the Internet. Because of the Internet, we have the ability to network without having to be together in person in real time. We can meet virtually and interact that way. Social networking is a major component of Internet traffic, and is the fourth most popular activity people online are engaged in. Putting this into perspective, the third most popular activity is using email. Social networking is used for all sorts of purposes online, from finding a romantic partner to reconnecting with old friends to finding employment opportunities.

Some social networking sites are more popular among professionals than others. Most professionals agree that Twitter, LinkedIn, and Facebook are appropriate for networking online.

Social networking via the Internet has been shown to have practical benefit for businesses. According to research, such networking can be very helpful with ordering materials, marketing goods and services, and hiring new employees.

LinkedIn is one of the most well-known sites geared to professionals who wish to network online. LinkedIn has been operating since 2003, and boasts more than 50 million users worldwide.

Facebook was begun originally as a social networking site for college students. However, it has since branched out to be one of the most popular and widely used sites on the Internet. More than 150 million users have Facebook accounts. Of this number, fully half are on the site daily. The age of users has also shifted from its college-centered beginning use among Americans age 35 and older has doubled in a matter of just a few months.

Twitter is less popular than Facebook or LinkedIn, but is gaining users and reaches an estimated 4.1 users monthly. Compared to other social networking sites, Twitter users are more likely to be female, highly educated, and technologically savvy than are the users of other social networking sites.
