If you have to get up extra early just to make the commute to an endless day job. Being able to do work from the comfort of your home may seem very appealing to you. Working at home definitely has its perks. But it does have its downsides if you are not fully prepared.

It’s still work…

Everyone has a different view on the work at home scene. Many believe it will allow them to spend a lot more time with family and friends, and allow them to play around all day. But the sad reality is, it’s still work - only at a different location. Work the same way as you would have if you commuted to work today.

Don’t get distracted

Normally when you are at home this is where you relax and have fun. When you are in the office it’s solely work. So what happens when you are working from home? Unless you can condition yourself easily, this is where your productivity will sink. Being at home you are prone to too many distractions. Since there may be many things that you could be doing instead of working, this can get difficult. Just stay focused.

Household chores

Often times, a spouse or a roommate will feel like you are just “playing on the computer” and wish for you to do your part of the household chores. It is important that others understand that this is your job and that you are “at work”. This doesn’t mean that you should neglect any of your household duties; it just means that you shouldn’t be doing them when you are working.

Conclusion

Working at home can be all you ever dreamed it to be or it could be a true nightmare. Not all people are cut out working in their pajamas. Condition yourself to work efficiently at home, cut out on distractions, explain to family members or roommates that you are “at work” and not “at home”, and treat the home office as you would a workplace. By utilizing these tips, it should increase your productivity in your new environment.
