Which Platform – Windows Or Linux?
May 10th, 2010 | Posted in Web Hosting. One of the first, and perhaps hardest decisions a new comer must make the web hosting platform you wish to place your server on. The two most popular choices are Windows and Linux web servers.
FTP commands and control panel – Windows and Linux servers do well with these, but because some of the programs are designed for a specific server, some of the commands can be different between the different operating systems. Because of this, you may occasionally receive messages regarding an error when running some FTP commands on one of these servers.
Support – Linux can be limited in support for some technology which can sometimes make it more expensive in comparison to Windows. As opposed to Windows, which uses more generic technologies, Linux used much more specific ones.
Reliability and Security Functions- Linux, which is generally used by software developers and those that engineer systems, often proves to be more reliable and to have some higher tech security features. Windows is more often used in the home or for the home office and is not quite as reliable or secure. It is much more likely that a Windows Operating System will be hacked into than a Linux Operating System and this may be because hackers expend a lot of energy seeking flaws in the Windows system.
* Performance – As a result of the packaging that Linux servers come with, they are reputed to offer a higher level of performance. Linux plans prove to be more uniquely produced for their target clients. But Windows goes with a more populist approach, with their one size fits all package for their general users.
Conversion – If you are considering an upcoming change in your Operating System, it would be just fine to have Linux server now as it is very easily shifted to hosting via Windows; Linux very easily transitions to Windows. However, if you are currently using Windows for hosting and are planning a switch to Linux, you can expect to have your work cut out for you, as it is an incredibly difficult switch.
