Using Direct Mail To Market Your Internet Business

May 11th, 2010   |   Posted in SEO.

It’s easy to forget that not everyone across the globe who you’d like to market your Internet business to is going to be online throughout the day. This is easy to do when most of the customers you have already sold products to are very internet capable, and use the internet everyday to either work, communicate, or find things that entertain them. We tend to forget, however, that there are tons of people who only use the internet for a few minutes throughout the day, if at all! So this brings up the question, how are you going to reach these people? One of the best ways to raise awareness of an internet venture offline is through direct mail.

Whenever you send out a letter or postcard for your campaign, be sure to hand write the address. Research indicates that individuals are far more likely to open mail which contains a handwritten address. More importantly, a handwritten envelope shows your recipient that you actually cared enough about communicating with them to do something by hand. It’s hard to find that these days. If you have a large mailing list and want to send out hundreds of letters, don’t be discouraged; simply write ten or twenty a day for a while and you will finish in no time. If you have sloppy handwriting, be sure to have someone that has an elegant writing style to do it for you.

Work your way up. It can be costly to mail lots of material. Stamp costs go up each year. It is for this reason that you want to start out with a very small targeted audience and test out their response to what you send. It’ll take a lot of trial and error to get to the responses you are looking for. Once you have found the sweet spot, you can increase the number of people that you mail to. If you keep on this track, you could eventually get to the point of sending out hundreds of pieces at once. Of course, don’t start out with hundreds of letters. No matter how much of a profit you can make on your product, you are going to spend quite a bit on direct mail. This is why you should always run some tests before going bigger.

Make it a point to hand sign each letter and postcard. You should even hand sign simple notes that are giving a head’s up about a sale you are having. If you have hundreds of people on your direct mail list, have a stamp of your signature designed so you can use it. Most people will probably be able to tell the difference between a stamp and a real signature, but to some extent it is the thought that counts and something is better than nothing. By using this little touch, people are going to see your commitment to your business. This will help the operation maintain professionalism.

Direct mail does not have to be intimidating. Soon enough, it’ll be second nature to you. As you continue to do direct mailing, it will become effortless. You will also notice the great success you can have from a direct mail campaign as they will often times outpace even your best online marketing efforts. Be sure to stay with it. You will see great results soon!
