Keywords are one of the most important part of Search Engine Optimization, as search crawlers depend on keywords in order to better rank the website. By getting a higher ranking on a website it means that it will be further up on pages of a search engine, hence improving the traffic and possibly the profit from on your website. Keywords are best utilized when chosen carefully after a lot of research and put properly into a website in order to achieve the highest ranking. There are many professionals that do just that, an SEO Consultant can research the right keywords for your website as well as input them in it so it’s more successful.

The most important part that you must have the keywords in your website in order to receive optimal results is in the title page, or title tag. Your title should be approximately 6-7 words long and its best to have the keyword in the beginning. The title of your website is the title that is shown in a search engines results, so keep it interesting and to the point. Another important point to have a keyword is in the URL of your website. Headings, or tags such as H1 or H2, should also include a keyword, however, keep in mind that for all of these, titles, URL’s, and headings, the keyword used must be a topic in your content. It must make sense to the information in your website.

As keywords are very important to a website sometimes it’s easy to get overboard with the amount in a website. If there are too many keywords in a website it will not only affect your rating but could possibly get your website removed from the search engine. A good way to check your websites keyword density is with one of the many tools available for SEO online at different online tools. Using this or any other density checker online, you can make sure that your keywords don’t exceed the appropriate 3-7% for major keywords and 1-2% density for the minor keywords. Should the density of your website come up as more than 10% it’s time to remove some unnecessary keywords.

Another place you have to input your keywords is in the Anchor Text. These are basically links, whether within your website or to inbound websites. It’s basically text that if you click on it has a hidden URL that takes you to a different website or webpage. Make sure that keywords are used properly and pertain to the webpage that it leads to. Also, make sure that the inbound links to your website are appropriate, a way to check that is by going to different online tools Having the proper keywords in the beginning of a document, or text on your website, is not as important as the above points, however, it can have an effect on your ranking. Keep in mind that the beginning of a document isn’t always the first paragraph if you use tables, sometimes it can be in the second or even halfway down a page. Also of the same importance are keywords in alt tags, which are basically alternative text, primarily used for images. Since web crawlers cannot read images, it’s good to input the necessary description using the proper keywords in the alt tag of the image.

Although metatags are not important for Google anymore, they still make a difference for Yahoo and Bing. Make sure that they are filled out properly and have the right keywords if you are optimizing for either of the two search engines. However, even if you are not it wouldn’t hurt your ranking in Google if you had them filled in anyway. Keyword Proximity is also good practice, it’s basically how close keywords are to each other. It’s good to have one right after the other, especially if it creates a phrase. A keyword d phrase is basically what it sounds like, instead of a searcher plugging in only one word, a phrase is two or more words. Keep in mind that some keyword phrases are best utilized individually. That must be determined depending on the keyword and which is searched more.

Although Google no longer uses metatags to rank their listings, Yahoo and Bing still do. So even if you are not optimizing for Yahoo or Bing, it wouldn’t have a negative effect on your website to have keywords in your metatags as well. This will just give you that extra boost and get listed in more search engines. It’s also good to have certain words close to each other in a text, this is called keyword proximity. This is a good way to have two individual keywords create a phrase. Keep in mind however, that not all keywords work best for your websites ranking together, and you should analyze which words are more appropriate individually and which as a phrase.

In order to get a more direct and targeted traffic to your website it’s good to use secondary words. A secondary word is basically a further broken down and more specific, such as an addition of a location or product. You will get less traffic, however, there will be less competition as well, and your traffic will be more specific to your website. Synonyms are also a great way to attract more traffic as search engines in English also look up synonyms of a word when you do a search. It’s a great way to add to your websites traffic and possible clientele. Misspelled words are yet another way to try and attract more traffic and web crawlers. However, it’s not always in your best interest as it’s not attractive to have misspelled words in your website. If you choose to use this method, you may want to plug them into your metatags, however, keep in mind that Google doesn’t read metatags anymore.

It’s important that you know how to apply the keywords you want to use in your website as it will make all the difference in your ranking. With good Search Engine Optimization and proper use of keywords a websites ranking can go up drastically and bring in far more searchers and possibly customers. If you don’t know how to apply the above techniques to your website it’s important to hire an SEO Consultant that will help you utilize your keywords properly.
