How To Generate Good SEO Keyword Research
May 19th, 2010 | Posted in SEO.In order to be successful in your search engine marketing campaign, you need to do SEO keyword research. Knowing the best keywords to use in your internet marketing campaigns is crucial if you want to rank well for search terms that will drive traffic to your website. Fortunately, learning how to research keywords is not difficult at all.
To keep yourself organized, you will want to use a spreadsheet program to record your keywords. Good old fashion pen and paper will work just as well. Saving your keywords lets you use them again for other projects for the same subject. You can even add to the list if you come across more keywords that work for you.
Start by thinking about the topic of your project. Write down all the keywords you think your customers will use to find the information or product you are offering on your website. For example, if you are running a dog training site, some keywords you may come up with would be, ‘How to train a dog’ or ‘dog training tips’.
After you have written down all the phrases you can think of, head on over to your favorite search engine. Pop in a keyword and search through the results list for websites that focus on the same or similar topic as your project. Analyze their site for keywords they are using and add them to your list.
If their website is properly search engine optimized then chances are they will have their keywords listed in the keyword meta tag located in the header of the website. To view the meta tag, you will need to check out the sites source code. To do that, Firefox users click ‘View’ and then ‘Page Source’. Internet Explorer users, select ‘Page’ and then pick ‘View Source’ to get at the information you want.
The next step is to tap into the power of a tool like Google’s Keyword Tool or WordTracker. These keyword generators will give you a list of search terms people have used to find information. To help you figure out if a keyword is worth pursuing, they will list the number of times the keyword was used per day.
By this time your page should be filled with keywords, probably more than you will ever use. So it is time to analyze them to find the best ones for your project. The first criterion is to learn how competitive a keyword is. Google Keyword Tool will provide this information. Obviously you don’t want to use a keyword that has a lot of competition however don’t automatically go for the keywords with no competition. They may not provide enough search volume to be worth your time.
To determine how profitable the keywords will be, look at the Estimated Average CPC. You will earn about 30-50% of the amount in that column. To calculate your possible earnings, multiply that amount by the total number of visits by 30 days. You can estimate that you’ll earn about 25% of that amount each month if you rank high enough for that keyword.
Proper SEO keyword research is necessary if you want to attract the right traffic from the search engines. Put the effort in to get it right and you’ll give you project a much better chance for success.
