How To Use Domain Names, Url’s, And Other Web Mastery For SEO

Knowing the basic techniques for Search Engine Optimization is important, however, there is so much more than the obvious and direct. That’s why it’s important to hire a professional SEO Consultant, as there is much more to SEO than many people think. It’s important that you optimize your entire website, down to the URL and domain name, as well as the smallest details in order to get the highest rating and most traffic.

Of course a website that is not accessible or has pages that are not accessible will not get a very good ranking. A website can become inaccessible if it has broken links or has areas that have password protection, or any number of other issues that can cause this problem. This makes the website impossible to index by web crawlers. Along with inaccessibility comes downtime. This is when the hosting of your website isn’t reliable and is often down. As web crawlers come to your website once every one or two months, and visit when the website is down, then it cannot be indexed and your rank will either drop or website disappear altogether. An unreliable provider will have no less than 2-3% downtime.

Sitemaps are a great optimization technique to higher rankings. They are simple and easy to make. All a site map is as simple as it sounds, a map of the website outlining the different pages, links, and structure. It enables a web crawler to better maneuver and index your website. When it comes to the size of a website it’s good to have a large one. However, try and keep it within reason, you won’t get penalized for having too big of a website, but the larger the website the less user friendly it is.

Many rankings are based on the age of a website. This is basically due to the belief that if a website has been around for a longer time, it is trusted and more reliable. An old website has more of a chance to stay online much longer due to its track record, while a newer website may close quickly, depending on who is running it. It’s just not as reliable. Another way to keep the attention of web crawlers is through a theme. It’s a great way to improve your ranking. By having a whole website with the same theme all of the web pages will get a boost in rank.

A sub domain name is basically a part of a domain that is larger. However, if you have a subdomain its best to just register a separate domain altogether. By doing this it’s simpler for web crawlers to rank your website. Another important part is the type of domain name you choose. There is a difference between the many domains as far as how trustworthy and how popular a website is. If there is a way to get it get an .edu, .org, or .gov domain. However, the basic .com or .net are also good. Make sure that you stay away from the lower ranked ones like .ws, .biz, .info and others that will not help your ranking at all.

The point to Search Engine Optimization is organizing your website in order for it to be easier for web crawlers to find and index it. Another way to further optimize your website it’s important to use hyphens in the domain and the rest of the URL. This will make the website easier to read and follow making the ranking higher. Also, try and keep your URL’s short and simple instead of allegeable and long. Having too long of an URL will look like a spam website and may cause your website to get a lower ranking or completely ignored by web crawlers. Try to keep your URL’s within 10 words total, about 3-4 for domain and 6-7 for the rest of the URL.

Try to use static URL’s instead of the dynamic ones. The difference is that a dynamic URL is a template which changes depending on the information pulled up, making the URL very long and unreadable. While a static URL is basically a regular web page that doesn’t change. Online you can find tools to organize a dynamic URL in order to clean it up and make it easier for web crawlers to see.

Session ID’s are definitely not a good idea, these basically give an ID to anyone entering the website, like an ID. Web crawlers cannot receive ID’s therefore they cannot enter the website and index it, leaving the website unranked. Some people like to protect their website from spammers and hackers by applying a roots.txt ban, which means that it bans robots from that particular page. As web crawlers are basically bots, they are banned from that part of the website, and eventually they stop visiting the entire website altogether.

Redirects are web pages that when you click on the link you are automatically redirected to another website or webpage. There are several issues with this, one being that it’s possible that the redirect page doesn’t work, however, the biggest problem is that it looks like cloaking, which is a black hat technique. This can get your ranking lowered and possibly removed off of the search engine.

In conclusion, it’s important to know the basics to URL’s and domain names and how to best apply them to your Search Engine Optimization techniques. An SEO Consultant will be able to utilize their knowledge and experience in getting your website a higher ranking as well as more traffic to your website by applying these techniques.
